The California Coastal Commission is voting Thursday on a proposal to drop poison on the Farallon Islands to eradicate an infestation of European house mice.
About 60,000 mice are believed to populate the islands, or about 1,270 mice per acre. If approved by the commission and the director of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), helicopters will drop 3,000 pounds of poisoned bait onto the islands, which are off the coast of San Francisco, beginning in autumn of 2023.
